Beamer swims to SPSL Championship over Curtis

The Todd Beamer Titans boys swim team is the best the South Puget Sound League has to offer this year. The talented Titans rolled to the league title Saturday by outdistancing the Curtis Vikings Saturday at the SPSL Championships at Curtis High School.

Beamer used individual first-place finishes from Bart Wanot, Ludomir Wanot and Shane Clare to pull away from Curtis. Wanot helped the Titans tally 249 team points, compared to 230 by Curtis. The two teams dominated the competition. Kentridge finished third with 150 points, Decatur ended up sixth (107), Jefferson was ninth (60) and Federal Way was 14th (8).

Bart Wanot won the 500-yard freestyle by over 20 seconds in an automatic state-qualifying time of 4:58.74. Clare finished first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.87 and Ludomir Wanot won the 1-meter diving event with 384.95 points.

But it was the relays that proved to be the difference for the Titans. Beamer won all three of the relays contested during the SPSL Championships and Bart Wanot was a part of all of them.

The Titans took home first-place medals in the 200 medley relay (Wanot, Cole Um, Clare and Jade Feigert in 1:47.01), the 200 free relay (Wanot, Feigert, Um and Costner McKenzie in 1:34.53) and the 400 free relay (Wanot, Clare, Ludomir Wanot and McKenzie in 3:27.65). Curtis finished second in all three relay races.

The Decatur Gators had a pair of individual champions during the SPSL Championships. Sean Sobus won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:57.59 and Noah Johnson finished first in the 50 free in 22.91.

Jefferson's Jordan Gaspay out-touched Feigert to win the 100 breaststroke championship in a time of 1:04.47. Feigert was second in 1:04.94.

The swimmers will now compete at the West Central District III Swimming and Diving Championships. The swimming portion of the meet will be held Feb. 5-6 at Rogers High School and the diving portion of the event will take place Thursday at Foss High School.

The top-six times and scores in the finals will advance to the Class 4A State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 19-20 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
