FOOTBALL: Jefferson shuts out Mount Rainier, 41-0, right in SPSL North playoff mix; FW rolls
The Thomas Jefferson football team gave their fans an impressive Homecoming gift Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Raiders shut out the Mount Rainier Rams, 41-0, to remain right in the playoff mix in the South Puget Sound League North Division.
The win over the Rams puts TJ in a tie for fourth place in the SPSL North with the Tahoma Bears. Both teams sit 4-2 in league play. Auburn Riverside leads at 6-0, followed by Kentwood (5-1) and Auburn (5-2). The top-four finishers in the SPSL North advance into the postseason.
The Raiders scored six touchdowns against Mount Rainier and they all came from different players. Senior quarterback Niko DelaCruz led things off with a 26-yard run and Tyrell Williams added an 18-yard touchdown run to give TJ a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, DelaCruz connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Lonyay Jones and Phillip Cuadros to put the Raiders up 28-0. Zach Grayson and Shane Seaume added second-half touchdown runs to finalize the 41-0 win.
Jefferson will travel to Kentridge Friday night to take on the 0-6 Chargers and will end the regular season with a trip to Maple Valley to play Tahoma. Wins in both games will guarantee the Raiders a berth in the postseason.
Federal Way 44, Spanaway Lake 13 — After leading just 14-13 in the second quarter, the Eagles tallied 30-straight points to down the Sentinels Friday at Art Crate Stadium. The win moved sixth-ranked Federal Way to 6-1 on the season.
The Eagles got three touchdowns from junior Chico McClatcher, including an 80-yard run and 73-yard catch. Senior fullback Eric Ah Fua added two touchdown runs and Eric Auelua scored from 1-yard out. Sam Han added a 36-yard field goal.
The Eagles host Auburn Saturday night in a non-league game. Auburn is 5-2 on the season.
Peninsula 40, Decatur 6 — The Gators fell to 1-6 with a loss Friday to the Seahawks. Peninsula jumped out to a 40-0 lead in an SPSL 3A battle.
Decatur's only score came on a 79-yard run by Noel Maafala in the third quarter. The Gators host Auburn Mountainview Friday night.
Emerald Ridge 40, Beamer 38 — The Titans just didn't have enough Thursday night. The Jaguars outlasted Beamer at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 40-38, in a SPSL South Division matchup.
Emerald Ridge's Cody Anderson scored on a 20-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to put the Jaguars up 40-31. Beamer's Jason Vaasuti scored a late touchdown for the Titans on a 36-yard run to finalize the score.
The Titans (2-5 overall) jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by Brody Martinez. The first was a 13-yarder and the second was from 34 yards out. But Emerald Ridge tallied the next 21 points to lead 28-14 at halftime.
After halftime, Beamer got a 3-yard touchdown run from Vaasuti and a 24-yard field goal from Sean Van Earwage to cut the lead to 28-24. The two teams than exchanged touchdowns, including Martinez's third score of the night on a 1-yard run.
The Titans travel to SPSL South-leading Graham-Kapowsin Oct. 25.
