The Thomas Jefferson girls will have a chance to improve on their seventh place finish at last year’s Class 4A State Cross Country Championships. The Raiders finished up in third place at Saturday’s Westside Classic District Meet at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood.

The third-place finish qualifies TJ’s six-girl team for Saturday’s state meet in Spokane. Bellarmine Prep, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, and Gig Harbor finished above the Raiders. Bellarmine tallied 45 points, Gig Harbor scored 52 and Jefferson finished with 109.

Helping the Raiders was the running of Kenna Patrick. The sophomore finished fifth in a very strong field, which included last year’s state champion Brie Felnagle from Bellarmine. Patrick finished the tough 3.1-mile course in 19:05, just over a minute behind Felnagle, who won in 17:50. Bellarmine’s Nicole Cochran was second (18:24), followed by Gig Harbor’s Stephanie Sipes (18:40) and Kesslee Payne (18:57).

Patrick’s Jefferson teammate, Jessica Schroeder, also had an impressive race Saturday. The senior finished 11th in a time of 19:15.

But the most impressive run of the day may have come from Todd Beamer’s McKinley Williams, who finished 22nd in 19:51 at the district meet. Williams will be Beamer’s first-ever participant at the state cross country meet. The top-40 individual finishers qualified. Williams finished 11th at the SPSL meet last week.

Other Federal Way School District qualifiers to state include Decatur’s Becky Williams (32nd in 20:09), Federal Way’s Carmen Acuna (34th in 20:14) and Decatur’s Kim Barney (35th in 20:15). Jefferson junior Hilorie Hildebrandt finished 23rd in a time of 19:54.

Class 4A Boys

Jefferson’s Erik Church will be the lone district representative at the Class 4A Boys State Cross Country Meet. Church, who swept through the SPSL South regular season, finished up in 31st place Saturday at the Westside Classic District Meet at American Lake Golf Course. Church finished the 3.1-mile course in 16:25.

Dan Lucero from Port Angeles won the race in 15:33. Port Angeles also won the team title with 87 points. Jefferson, who won the SPSL South Division regular season title, finished 11th with 301 points. The top-seven teams automatically qualified for state.
