Jefferson freshman Amy Friedhoff came of age Friday and Saturday at the West Central District 3-B Class 4A girls swimming championships. The ninth-grader won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free at the Rogers High School Aquatic Center.

Friedhoff will be swimming in both events at the Class 4A State Swimming Championships Nov. 12-13 at the King County Aquatic Center. Friedhoff’s brilliance led the Raiders to a second-place finish as a team. Rogers, the two-time defending state champions, finished with 186 points and Jefferson ended up with 135 points. Decatur was fourth with 118, Beamer was 14th and Federal Way finished 16th at the 19-team meet.

Friedhoff outtouched Kentlake senior Sara White-Delehoy in the 200 in a time of 1:57.06 and easily beat Kentwood freshman Marley Prothero in the 500 in 5:12.19. Friedhoff will also be part of a pair of relay teams at the state championships. The Raiders finished up second in the 200 freestyle relay behind Enumclaw in an automatic state-qualifying time of 1:45.17 and the 400 free relay (3:49.47). Senior Brendy Stevens and juniors Tasia Esparza and Kerri Blegen were the other three members of the relay teams.

Decatur will also be represented at the state swim meet. The Gators’ 200-yard medley relay team of senior Niko Olsrud, sophomores Jill Heydon and Alyssa Boggs and freshman Katie Matulic finished third in an automatic state-qualifying time of 1:57.96. Individually, Matulic finished fourth in the 200 individual medley in a state-qualifying time of 2:11.38 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in an automatic qualifying time of 1:09.78.

The meet at Rogers included 246 competitors in 12 events. Friday and Saturday’s meet was one of two for the West Central District (the other involved Narrows League schools at Foss). The event winners in each meet automatically qualified for state. Then, the next five fastest times from the two meets combined also qualified, regardless of whether they have met the team standard.
