Gators spiked at districts

By CASEY OLSON

The Decatur volleyball team couldn’t get it done Friday at the West Central/Southwest 4A District Tournament.

The Gators lost two straight matches against Bellarmine Prep and Wilson at Kentwood High School at the 16-team tournament. The top-seven placers advanced to this weekend’s Class 4A state championships at the Everett Events Center.

Against Bellarmine, who finished third in the Narrows League, downed Decatur in their opener Friday in four games, 25-15, 18-25, 25-14, 25-17. Bellarmine went on to finish second in the tournament, losing to Heritage (Vancouver) in the final.

The Gators then lost a five-game heart-breaker to Wilson, who finished sixth in the Narrows. Decatur lost the first two games, 26-24, but rallied to take the third and fourth games, 25-12, 25-22, before losing the fifth and deciding game, 15-13.

The losses end what was a solid season by Decatur. The Gators finished fifth in the rugged South Puget Sound League South Division, but won all three of their matches at the SPSL Tournament to claim the fifth seed from the 19-team league entering districts.

The Gators and coach Kelly Kirk will also be losing several key contributors, including seniors Allison Iwasaki and Brittany Ashby. Iwasaki, an outside hitter, led the Gators in kills thanks, in large part, to the setting of Ashby.
