FWay teams win Blast Off titles

The Federal Way Soccer Association was a solid host for the first weekend of the annual Blast Off Soccer Tournament last weekend at fields around the city.

It was the girls’ turn Friday through Sunday and the boys took to the fields yesterday and champions will be crowned tomorrow at Celebration Park. During the two-week Blast Off tournaments, Federal Way plays host to over 140 youth soccer teams from around the Pacific Northwest.

The Federal Way Soccer Association was also pretty gracious in allowing visiting teams to take away bracket championships during the girls’ portion of the Blast Off. The soccer association won four of the 19 titles over the three-day tournament.

The Federal Way United Blaze ‘93 took home first place in the under-11 Bracket C with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the FC Royals ‘93 White, from the Tacoma-Pierce County Junior Soccer Association, in the championship game. The Blaze cruised through their preliminary round matches in the six-team bracket. The Blaze beat the Hurricanes 5-2, downed the Angels 1-0, and beat the Bumblebeez 2-0 to earn the berth into the title game. Ashlyn Bruin won the Sportsmanship Award for the Blaze.

The Federal Way United Reign ‘93 White won the 11-and-under Bracket B championship by beating Oregon’s OSC Heartbreakers ‘93, 1-0. It was the Reign’s second 1-0 win over the Heartbreakers during the tournament. They also beat FC Aanvallen ‘93 Green, 3-0, and Harbor FC ‘93 White, 4-1. Reign goalkeeper Meghan Graf won the Sportsmanship Award.

The Federal Way Soccer Association Apollos won the 14-and-under Bracket C title with a 2-0 victory over the Blue Flames ‘90 in he championship. The Apollos also beat the Blue Flames 3-0 in earlier round play, 3-1, tied Force ‘90, 2-2, and beat the Timberbarons White, 3-2. The Apollos’ Lauren Rockwell won the Sportsmanship Award.

The final title won by the Federal Way Soccer Association came from the Reign ‘86 under-19 team. Reign ‘86 beat Cascade Select from Snohomish County, 3-0, in the final. The Reign didn’t allow a goal during the tournament. They also beat SSSFC ‘86 Force, 1-0, the Skagit Storm ‘86 White, 2-0 and Cascade Select, 1-0, in earlier play. Serena Frazier won the Sportsmanship Award.

Championship-round play for the boys’ portion of the Blast Off Tournament will get underway at 8 a.m. tomorrow. All title games will be played at Celebration Park.
