Decatur wins state cheer title

The Decatur cheerleaders are the best in the state.

The Gators won first place at the Washington State Cheer Coaches Association Cheerleading Championships March 27 at Kentlake High School in the medium varsity division, which included all-girl teams with 13 to 18 members.

Decatur outdistanced three other schools for first place — Skyview, Tahoma and Columbia River. The Gators tallied 75.3 points, followed by Skyview’s 71.3.

“This is the only competition that we do,” Decatur coach Laurie Beaver said about the state championships. “Some of the other (squads) compete on a regular basis. The girls spent a ton of hours practicing.”

Before the Gators took the floor at Kentlake to perform their routine, Beaver gathered them together and asked them “as a team, what is it they loved to do and did they have fun doing it? Their replay was they loved to cheer. So I told them to go show everyone out there and I guess they did.”

The team includes Shauntea Churchill, Amanda Conner, Nicole Corley, Katie Crafton, Jennifer Downs, Christine Duffy, Lisa Epperson, Lindsay Fay, Jessica Gross, Amanda Hastings, Rachel Hicks, Shana Koubele, Josie Leonard, Nichole Ross, Lindsey Swezea and Danielle Templeman.
