Jefferson swimmers ready for state meet

The homefield advantage is always big in any sport. The Thomas Jefferson swim team will have that when the Class 4A State Swimming/Diving Championships get underway Thursday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.

The Raiders qualified two individual swimmers during last week’s West Central District Meet — sophomores Tasia Esparza and Lindsey Hesla. Esparza will swim in the 100-yard breaststroke after posting an automatic state-qualifying time of 1:11.30 at the district meet and Hesla will be swimming in the 100-yard backstroke after finishing fourth at the district meet in a time of 1:03.79.

The Raiders’ 200-yard freestyle relay team also qualified by finishing in fourth place at the West Central District Meet at Rogers High School. The team, which includes Esparza, Hesla, sophomore Kerri Blegan and junior Brendy Stevens, finished the race in 1:46.34. The first-place team at the district meet, Curtis, won in 1:46.07.

The Class 4A state meet will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Friday with preliminary heats in the swimming events and will run until 8 p.m. at the Aquatics Center. The finals and consolations will take place Saturday from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
