Sally Roberts has a new medal in her ever-growing trophy case. The Federal Way High School graduate finished in third place at the World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling Sunday morning at Madison Square Garden in New York City — earning her a bronze medal.

Roberts pinned Marianna Sastin of Hungary in 5:36 to take third. The win over Sastin followed a heartbreaking loss in the semifinals to Russia’s Natalia Ivashko — a match that had its own ups and downs. Roberts fell behind 7-0, only to rally to 7-5 after scoring a flurry of points in the final minute. But that was how the match ended.

“It’s really upsetting that people know how hard I’ve trained and how hard I’ve worked and I go out and lose,” Roberts said following the match.

But the 1999 Federal Way grad bounced back the next day to earn the bronze.

“The ability to rebound and be successful and improve on what you can do… that’s wrestling,” she said. “All I wanted to do was cry on the phone to my mom. But crying would only make it worse, so I got focused.”

This was Roberts’ first trip to Worlds after winning the gold at the United States Freestyle Championships earlier this year. Roberts wrestles in the 59-kilo division, which equals out to about 130 pounds. The United States women’s team placed second behind Russia.

“This is my first medal, but not my last,” Roberts said.
