Eagles have no answer for Sentinels
The Federal Way Eagles looked like they were ready to start the season with a victory over the Spanaway Lake Sentinels Friday night at Art Crate Stadium.
Federal Way went into the locker room at halftime with a commanding 14-0 lead, but left the field two quarters later with a 21-14 loss to the Sentinels.
The Eagles will play their home opener at 7 p.m. Saturday against the Emerald Ridge Jaguars at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. Emerald Ridge is coming off a 48-22 loss to Bethel, the defending South Puget Sound League South Division champion. The Jaguars were led by Brynson Brown. The receiver hauled in a pair of touchdown catches and also had 11 tackles on defense.
Against Spanaway Lake, the Eagles gave up three touchdowns in the final two quarters to suffer the loss. The back-breaker for the Eagles came with two minutes remaining in the game. Spanaway Lakes Maurice Jones broke through the Federal Way line and tallied the go-ahead touchdown to complete a 21-0 run by the Sentinels.
Federal Ways senior quarterback Scott Lelli was solid in his debut as the signal caller. Lelli finished the game 19-for-30 with 189 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for the Eagles other score.
Lelli gave the Eagles the early lead on a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. A few minutes later, Lelli hit receiver Jeff Thatcher on an 8-yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles up 14-0.
