The Federal Way Buzz, a 14-under Sandy Koufax division baseball team, ended its season with a tie for third-place finish at the Sandy Koufax Washington State Tournament in Shoreline last weekend.

“We did really well,” said assistant coach Brian Bixenman. “We really picked it up at the end of the season.”

During league play, in the Olympic Division, the Buzz finished with a 17-12-1 record — good for seventh place — and were 32-16-1 overall.

“We kind of had a lull there where we didn’t play too good,” Bixenman said. “We had some injuries.”

At the state tournament, which was held at Hamlin Field, the Buzz won two and lost two. They opened with a 5-1 loss to the Kent Cannons before downing the Northwest Timberjacks, 9-3, and the Northwest Dodgers, 17-3, in loser’s bracket play. Federal Way was eliminated by the Issaquah Bears, 13-8.

The Federal Way Buzz is a select team with players hailing from Federal Way, Decatur, Todd Beamer and Auburn high schools, among others.

“It is probably the highest level for little-guy baseball,” said Bixenman.

Federal Way Buzz players include Alex Mesick (.462, three home runs, seven RBIs), Matt Hart (.416), Brock Gates (seven RBIs), Brad Carter, Beau Dider (.454), Michael Franz (three home runs, nine RBIs), Cole Bixenman (.462, four doubles), Cody Goodfellow, Davis Johnson, Brady Kincannon and Dustin Martin.

Franz and Bixenman were named to the all-tournament team at state. The Buzz is currently ranked fourth in Washington in the USA Sports rankings.
