Federal Way American's run ends with loss

Federal Way American fell short of their goal of winning the District 10 All-Star Little League baseball tournament. The Americans ended up in third place after a pair of weekend losses at White Center Stadium.

Federal Way rolled into the semifinals where they ran into the eventual champions — Bonney Lake/Sumner Little League. The 11-7 semifinal loss Friday night dropped the Americans into the loser’s bracket where they were downed by Kent Little League 15-14 in extra innings in a game Saturday that would have given them a rematch with Bonney Lake/Sumner in the District 10 final.

“We have a saying for all our teams, ‘Win with pride and lose with pride,’” said manager J. Roberts. “This team displayed stellar attitudes in both winning and losing.”

The Americans rolled into the semifinals with three straight wins in early-tournament play before running into the Bonney Lake/Sumner team. The Americans picked up an easy first-round 10-1 victory over Skyway/Tukwila Little League on July 5.

Federal Way then downed Fife/Milton July 6 in the second round in a tough 3-2 game to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Kent Little League. The Americans beat up Kent July 8, 7-3, to earn a berth into the semifinals.

“Each year (we have) a small group of players to pick from compared to the other leagues and each year our teams usually give the competition a run for the title,” Roberts said. “That is something our (league) will always be the most proud.”

The Federal American All Stars were C.J. Andrus, Andre Barrington, Greg Bull, Wade Collie, Tyler Cratzenberg, Nick Edwards, Winston Gatlabayan, Jordan Hale, Ryan Kim, Vinton Lane, Joe Ronfeldt, Michael Sigafoos and Isiah Umipig.

Steel Lake

The Steel Lake Little Leaguers put up a valiant effort at the District 10 tournament, but fell short with a heart-breaking, 2-1, loss to Kent Little League Thursday night at White Center Stadium.

The loss to Kent ended a three-game winning streak at the tournament for the Steel Lake all stars. After being blown away in their opening-round game July 5 to Auburn Little League, 9-1, Steel Lake fell into the loser’s bracket.

That is where Steel Lake made some noise. The all stars downed Renton South, 6-3, July 6, beat Fife/Milton Little League, 8-7, on July 7 and finally downed Tahoma, 4-2, to set up their matchup with Auburn.

The 2003 Steel Lake Little League All Stars included Kyle Ashton, Jerry Burton, Erik Davis, Kama Frank, Jordan Hibbard, Quinn Hildebrandt, Kenny Johnson, Andrew Jones, Jason Minerich, Josh Osborn, Drew Staples and Tyson Sykes.

Federal Way National

The Federal Way National All Stars had a rough go of it at the District 10 tournament. National lost its first two games to drop out of the tournament. Fife/Milton beat Federal Way National, 3-1, and Soundview Little League bounced them, 8-6, in the loser’s bracket first round.

Federal Way National 2003 All Stars included Carson Wolbert, Bobby Joe Tannehill, Jared Dearinger, Justin MacDonald, Corey Zalewski, Nelson Atkinson, Nick Rasmussen, Conner McFaul, Brian Moe, Michael Patenaude, Matt Elya, Johnny Palko and Cameron Schilling.
