Steel Lake juniors rolling to state tournament

In the battle of Federal Way, Steel Lake came out on top.
Steel Lake Little League picked up its first-ever District 10 Junior League All-Star Tournament championship last week with a 7-4 win over Federal Way American in the title game at South King County Fields in Federal Way.
The 13- to 14-year-old team now moves on to the Junior Little League State Tournament at Wheeler Field in Centralia.
Steel Lake will open up state tournament play at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of the state tourney will advance to the Western Regional Tournament in Union City, Calif., Aug. 2-7. The Junior League World Series will be held in Taylor, Mich.
Steel Lake was undefeated in the District 10 tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. The all stars downed Federal Way National 6-2 in the opening round, beat Auburn, 3-1, in the quarterfinals and beat Renton North, 8-5, in the semifinals before meeting Federal Way American.
Steel Lake is coached by Jay Poole, who is assisted by Jim Beers and Rod Smith. Players include Jordan Beers, Kyle Compton, Brandon Dewes, Chris Grove, Justin Hoffman, Dustin Horsfall, Michael Keller, Travis Lanier, C.J. Poole, Cameron Smith and Brian Yee.
Federal Way Americans appearance in the final game was quite a feat. American was shut out in their opening game, 3-0, by Fife/Milton, requiring them to fight their way through the losers bracket.
Federal Way American beat Renton South, 14-9, downed Bonney Lake/Sumner, 10-0, beat Auburn, 6-2, downed Renton North, 3-1, and got by Federal Way National, 8-3, to get into the final.
After losing their opener to Steel Lake, Federal Way National also fought through the losers bracket. National beat Skyway/Tukwila, 15-4, Fife/Milton, 10-9, and Kent, 8-1, before losing to American.
Senior Little League
Steel Lake fell short of winning the District 10 Senior Baseball All-Star Tournament by losing to Kent in the final, 7-5. The 15-under tournament was held at White Center Stadium.
Steel Lake shut out Fife/Milton in the opener, beat Federal Way National in the quarterfinals before losing to Kent, 13-3, in the semifinals. They downed Skyway/Tukwila, 8-7, to earn another match up with Kent.
Team members include Andrew Anderson, Jeremy Anderson, Zach Bamer, Matt Davidson, Ryan Dodd, Erik Eskesen, Derek Hickman, Jamie Moore, Jeff Moyer, Eric Nishimura, Noah Russell, Jeff Salmon and Jeff Sembar.
The District 10 Little League Baseball All-Star Tournament is continuing at White Center Stadium. The Federal Way American Little Leaguers rolled into the semifinals where they took on Bonney Lake/Sumner last night for a berth into the championship game, which will be played at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The loser will play at 10 a.m. today in White Center.
