Abang-Rice and Yellam-Yates roll to state tourney

Decatur’s Brandon Abang and Chris Rice ran into a pair of buzzsaws Saturday in the finals of the Class 4A West Central District tennis tournament at the University of Puget Sound.

Auburn Riverside twins Dane and David Miller downed Abang and Rice, 6-2, 6-1, for their third straight district title in just 40 minutes.

But, despite the loss, Abang and Rice advance to the state tournament Friday and Saturday in Kennewick as the district’s No. 2 seed. The Miller twins, bound for Whitman University, have won the last two doubles state titles.

The Decatur pair will be joined at the state championships by Federal Way’s Danielle Yellam and Kristen Yates. The Eagle doubles team snared the seventh and final berth from the West Central District on Saturday with a rugged three-set victory over Jefferson’s Katie Schultz and Corrina Fabre, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
