The Federal Way High gymnastics team hasn’t lost yet this season, so why should it start now?

The Eagles rolled out another dominating performance in winning the team title in their home gym at the district meet Saturday.

“It was pretty breathtaking,” said Federal Way coach Bev McIrivin. “They were right on everything. It was fun to watch.”

The next challenge is Friday’s state meet at the Tacoma Dome. Federal Way’s team rotation starts at 1:55 p.m.

At districts, the Eagles scored 178.075 points to beat Sumner’s 176.425 and Auburn’s 175.850.

It’s the first district gymnastics championship Federal Way has ever won.

“They all stepped up a notch,” McIrivin said of her team.

The top three teams advance to state. Decatur finished fifth and Jefferson was sixth.

Federal Way has been to state twice before –– in 1997 and last year. Both times the Eagles finished third. This time they are hoping for a little more.

“We’re undefeated and if we can maintain that, that would be outstanding,” McIrvin said. “It’s a major accomplishment just to get there. The kids have worked hard. They want it really bad.”

At Saturday’s meet, Auburn’s Brianna Thomas won the all-around with a score of 38.0. Sumner’s Bri Schwartz was second with 37.95 and Federal Way’s Lauren Webb was third with 37.775 points.

Webb was second in three events: the vault, bars and beam, but her score was hurt by a sixth-place finish in the floor exercise.

Federal Way’s Robin Luedke was fifth in the all-around with 36.375 points and Decatur’s Kelly Miller was sixth with 36.0 points.

The top five all-arounders not competing with one of the top three teams advance to state. Miller will go on to state as the highest-placing all-arounder not on one of the top-three teams.

Other area gymnasts competing at state in one or more individual events include Jefferson’s Stacy Lyver on the bars, beam and floor; Decatur’s Jaime Decker on the vault, bars and floor; Decatur’s Alyssa Wood on the beam and floor; Jefferson’s Sarah Cherian on the bars, beam and floor; Decatur’s Jen Ashton on the floor; Jefferson’s Andrea Kasper on the vault and bars; Jefferson’s Mandy Wolf on the bars and beam and Decatur’s Jessica Eisenberg on the vault, bars and beam.

Federal Way gymnasts competing at state as part of the team include Brianne Hall, Kellie Horrocks, Jodie Spillner, Ashley Sparks, Dhea Holland and Susan Lezcano.
