Eagles fly away with all-city, SPSL titles
By COLE COSGROVE
The Federal Way gymnastics team capped an unbeaten regular season in Wednesdays all-city meet to win the South Puget Sound League championship.
In my 20 some years coaching, weve won it a few times, Federal Way coach Bev McIrvin said. Its always a rewarding feeling. The kids have worked hard and Im fortunate to have a great group to do that.
Federal Way scored 175.35 team points to Decaturs 170.95 and Jeffersons 165.45.
Federal Way junior Lauren Webb won the all-around with 36.95 points. She won the vault, the bars and the floor exercise.
Decatur senior Kelly Miller was second in the all-around with 36.1 points. She won the beam.
Coming into the season, we werent too sure if wed be able to come together, said Miller, who led the Gators to a fifth place finish in the final league standings. Weve had a lot of injuries, but we pulled through.
Federal Way has never won a district championship, but is the No. 1 ranked team in the state heading into the district meet, which is Feb. 15 at Federal Way.
They work well together, Miller said of the Eagles. They have good dynamics and know how to show off their team.
Jefferson, which is a relatively young team, finished seventh in the tough, 14-team South Puget Sound League.
Were still learning and coming on, Jefferson coach Deb Hunter said. We keep improving.
