Gators swim to SPSL South title

It hasn’t always been this good.

Tyson Sullivan remembers when he was a ninth-grader and was the only person on an 11-member Decatur swim team to qualify for state.

Following that were three seasons without a league victory. Even last year the team won only three league meets..

“I don’t know if Decatur has ever been league champion,” coach Heather Kreier said. “We’ve done nothing but improve.”

Thursday’s 103-83 win over Curtis at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center assured Decatur a tie with defending state champion Puyallup for the league title. Puyallup and Decatur tied at their dual meet earlier this season and are looking forward to a rematch at districts Feb. 7 and at state Feb. 21.

“It just seems unreal,” said Decatur captain Joon Youm, who won three races and swam on two winning relays. “Right now it just feels good and we can still accomplish more.”
