Decatur volleyball tops Federal Way in five

It took five games, but the Decatur volleyball team finally beat Federal Way Friday at Decatur.

Decatur won the first two games 15-8, 15-4 before Federal Way came back in the third and fourth games. The Eagles won those games 15-2, 15-9. Decatur responded in the fifth and deciding game with a 15-7 win.

The Gators were led by 11 kills from 6-foot junior Jen Mooth and 22 assists by sophomore Brittany Ashby. Senior outside hitter Leslie Schamberg had nine kills for the Gators.

Federal Way was led by senior outside hitter Monique HildebrandtŽ’s 11 kills and three aces. Senior setter Danielle Yellam had 22 assists

Junior outside hitters Tracie Loo had seven kills and Natalie Smith had 19 digs.

Decatur improved to 2-0 in pre-season games. FW fell to 0-4.

The regular season starts tomorrow. Federal Way hosts Puyallup at 7:15 p.m. Decatur hosts Emerald Ridge at 7:15 p.m. Jefferson plays at 7:15 p.m. at Spanaway Lake.

Federal Way and Decatur play again on Oct. 9, when the result will actually count toward the South Puget Sound League standings.
