Decatur diver earns scholarship
Christina Hussong, a senior at Decatur, signed a letter of intent last week to attend Southern Methodist University on a diving scholarship.
Hussong won this seasons high school Class 4A state diving championships. She was also selected as a 2001 All-American for diving by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association one of only two girls from Washington honored with the selection.
The dive coach there is awesome, Hussong said. Hes been coaching at the university for 20 years, hes a nationally ranked coach and one of the team members is on the U.S. National Team. Its cool to have an opportunity to work with somebody of that caliber. Hes coached a few national champions.
Hussong said her goal for her freshman season is to make the Western Athletic Conference championships. Eventually, she said she wants to make it to the NCAA championships and place in the top 16.
I have a lot of goals and hope I can reach some of them, Hussong said.
This summer, Hussong is keeping busy by competing in the Junior Olympics.
Hussong visited five schools during her recruiting trips before narrowing her choices to Southern Methodist in Dallas or the University of Nevada in Reno.
Im excited, Hussong said. Reno offered me more (in scholarship money), but I felt the education at SMU is a lot better. Im really happy with it, but it is far. Its not like Im trying to get away from home, it just turned out that way.
Hussong said she is leaning toward studying business. SMU is a top 30 business school.
I was really motivated by that, Hussong said. I felt more comfortable there and I knew I wouldnt be missing out on anything.
