Decatur wrestlers win regionals
For the second year in a row, the Decatur wrestling team won the Class 4A Region III championship.
The Gators finished with 164 point, 13.5 points better than second-place Heritage.
Winning regionals is tough, said coach Mike Bressler. And were in the toughest region in the state.
Decatur crowned two champions in senior Ryan Trotter, who defeated Cory Vombaur of Evergreen 8-5 for the 103-pound title, and Kyle Bressler, who dominated Sean Kelly of Bellarmine Prep 14-1 to claim the 171-pound title.
Other Decatur finalists include Brandon Bell , who lost a close 6-4 decision to Joel Mack of Heritage at 140 pounds, Jason Bressler, who lost 5-1 at 160 pounds to Derrick McLaughlin of Capital, and Dan Esbenshade, who lost 9-7 to Yuri Malamura of Spanaway Lake.
In the 145-pound match to decide third and fourth places, Decatur senior Eric Honda beat Jeffersons Todd Turner 3-1.
Federal Ways Jeff Krogman advanced to state by taking fourth place after losing 8-4 to Don Shaffer of Wilson.
The top four wrestlers advance to this weekends Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
