Wrestlers look to qualify for state

The Region III wrestling tournament at Evergreen High School wraps up today with the tournament finals.

Decatur sent 13 wrestlers to this year’s tournament, Jefferson sent six wrestlers and Federal Way sent three.

“We’re just hoping to get as many qualified for state as we can,” said Decatur coach Mike Bressler. “That’s the ultimate goal, get as many to state so we can score points.”

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state tournament at the Tacoma Dome.

At last year’s regional tournament, Decatur’s Ryan Trotter finished second, Jason Bressler took third and Anthony Cossano took fourth as Decatur tied for first place at regionals and advanced seven wrestles to the state tournament.

Trotter dropped down to 103 pounds this year after placing seventh at 112 pounds at state last year.

“He’s looking really strong,” Bressler said. “He got sick early in the season and that kind of helped him lose some weight. Right now it’s kind of easy for him (to make weight). He’s wrestling real tough. Nobody comes close to him.”

One challenge Trotter will face is his opponent from Evergreen, who Trotter beat 1-0 earlier this season.

“I really think he needs to get in the best shape he can be in and he can be right there with any of them,” Bressler said.

The Gators are hoping to defend their regional title and advance even more wrestlers to state this year.

“I’m pleased with how we’re doing,” Bressler said. “At this point, it’s not about predictions, it’s about who goes out there and wrestles.”
