Gators win sub-regional championship

The Decatur wrestling team decisively won the subdistrict tournament by almost 100 points.

The Gators racked up 296 points to top second-place team Curtis’ 199 in Friday and Saturday’s South Puget Sound League, South Division subregional tournament at Bethel High School.

Decatur placed wrestlers in the championship match of 11 weight classes. Six came away champions.

Jefferson advances six wrestlers to this weekend’s regionals. Federal Way sends three wrestlers to this weekend’s matches.

Decatur’s Ryan Trotter (103 pounds), Jon Joseph (112), Brandon Bell (140), Jason Bressler (160), Kyle Bressler (171) and Joe Issac (215) earned individual titles.

Trotter and Kyle Bressler each won by technical fall.

Bell defeated cross-town rival Kevan Haack of Jefferson 2-1 in the finals.

Other wrestlers who took second include Decatur’s Dustin English (119), Anthony Cossano (125), Erik Honda (145), Nick McCluskey (152) and Dan Esbenshade (189).

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to Friday and Saturday’s regional wrestling tournament at Evergreen High School in Vancouver.

Jefferson’s JJ Campollo (103) and David Markey (112), Federal Way’s Ludevic Meo (125), Gerry Weir (140) and Jeff Krogman, and Decatur’s Myzell Foster (275) each won in the consolation finals to take third place.

Jefferson’s Todd Turner, Travis Wilson and Ricky Leiser, and Decatur’s Hoan Do all finished fourth.
