Area teams win 9 league titles in 2001

The 2001 athletic year was kind to high school sports teams in Federal Way.

Federal Way finished third in the South Puget Sound League, South Division all-sports rankings with 216 points. Decatur was fourth with 198 points.

Puyallup won the all-sports standings with 237.5 points and Curtis was second with 218.8 points.

Jefferson ranked seventh out of nine schools with 169.5 points in the final SPSL standings.

Points are awarded based on each team’s final standing in the SPSL. For example, if a team wins the league championship, it is awarded 20 points. A last-place team is given one point.

Points are divided in the event of a tie.

Federal Way was helped in the standings by a strong spring sports season. The school topped the list in the SPSL’s spring all-sports standings with 93 points.

Federal Way’s spring success included four league championship teams — baseball, fastpitch, girls track and boys track.

Decatur’s best season overall was winter. Its wrestling team won the league title. It was also helped by solid performances from its teams in gymnastics, boys swimming and boys basketball.

In spring sports. Decatur boys soccer and girls tennis teams won league championships.

Jefferson’s best season was this fall, in which the boys tennis team and girls cross country team won league championships.
