Federal Way swimmers take third at relays

The Federal Way boys swim team took third at the Rogers Holiday Relays Saturday.

“It was one of the better ones I’ve been to,” said assistant coach Malcolm Neely. “In the past we’ve gone with three or four really good guys and gone for wins in the individual races. But this year we were really able to put forth a pretty good team in every event.”

Federal Way finished with 58 points, just four points behind champion Curtis’ 62 and two points back from second-place Kentridge’s 60.

Two Federal Way relay teams took first in their events.

The team of Eric Weishaar, Alan Hunter, Chris Ball and Chris McColgan won the 4x50 freshman and sophomore relay.

The team of McColgan, Ben Hogan and Jackson Dovey finished first in the 3x50 backstroke relay.

“This year we don’t have the superstar guys, but we have a lot of depth — more depth than we’ve ever had,” Neely said. “That really came out in this meet. You have to put out eight guys in certain relays, and there was really no let down from any of them.”

Decatur won the 3x50 breaststroke relay. The Gators finished fifth overall out of 10 teams.

Federal Way and Decatur square off head-to-head at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

Jefferson hosts Puyallup at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, also at the aquatic center
