This season was one of the best ever for girls high school soccer in Federal Way. All three high school teams finished in the top four in the South Puget Sound League.

Jefferson and Federal Way advanced to the West Central District playoffs.

The top player in the league was Jefferson junior Chelsea Hunt, who was voted by the coaches as the SPSL’s Most Valuable Player.

“She’s such an instinctive player,” said Jefferson coach Amy Sutherland. “She’s developed some skills and instincts. She seems to glide on the field and the ball glides with her. It’s kind of unique, the way she’s developed, it’s hard to explain. She loves the game and is motivated to put in extra training before and after practice.”

Hunt, who plays forward, led the Raiders with 34 goals, just three shy of her school record 37 goals last season. But Hunt wasn’t selfish with the ball — she also led the team in assists with 20.

“She’s starting to really understand what her team expects from her,” Sutherland said. “And she doesn’t get a big ego about it. She’s really humble and wants to come through for her teammates.”

Three of those teammates join Hunt on the All-City Team. Fellow forward Rachael Maus, a sophomore, was the Raiders’ second leading scorer.

A pair of Jefferson defenders — junior Jamie Salmon and sophomore Ashley Sanders — earned spots on the All-City Team with their tenacious defense that helped keep opponents off the board. Salmon was also a First Team All-SPSL selection. Jefferson senior goalkeeper Jessica Allen was one of the best keepers in the league as the SPSL’s First-Team goalkeeper.

Decatur is represented on the All-City Team by a pair of skilled midfielders. Senior captains Khara Stoneback and Chelse Zegzula helped control the ball for the Gators this season. Both were SPSL First-Team selections.

Federal Way’s sophomore forward Ashlyn White led the Eagles in scoring. Senior midfielder Kelsey Milligan was a captain and a leader on the field. Senior forward Lauren Price also earned All-City honors.

Federal way senior defender Audrey Howell earned All-City honors in addition to a place on the SPSL First Team. Junior defender Kim Loebe also earned All-City honors.

Federal Way freshman Rachael Christenson is an All-City midfielder after her outstanding first season with the Eagles.
