Hussong, Hong lead Decatur swim team

Decatur swimmers and divers won three events to lead the Gators to a third-place finish at Saturday’s district championships at Rogers.

Decatur junior Sandy Hong repeated as champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle and Decatur senior Christina Hussong won the district diving championship for the third consecutive year.

“It was kind of expected, but I had that pressure,” Hussong said. “I had to keep my nervousness down.”

Hussong’s cumulative score was 394.8. Federal Way’s Shannon O’Neal also made the diving finals and earned a 12th place finish. O’Neal scored 202.84 points.

Both Hussong and O’Neal will compete in the state allocation meet at 4 p.m. Friday at Peninsula.

“I’m going to have to keep consistent,” Hussong said. “Consistency is key in diving.” Jefferson junior Caitlin Friedhoff repeated as winner of the 50 freestyle in 0:24.77.

She also swam the 100 freestyle in 0:53.45, good enough for second place despite swimming half a second faster than the meet record she set last year.

Decatur won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.32 and the Jefferson team swam to second place in 1:45.27.
