TJ shuts out Decatur 1-0

A fluke shot was all it took for Jefferson to beat Decatur 1-0 Thursday at Federal Way Memorial Field.

“I don’t even know what happened,” said Chelsea Hunt, who scored the game winner. “I just kind of got my foot on it.”

Hunt was 20 yards away from the goal when she received a pass from junior Shelley Greene. Hunt, who was tightly defended all game by Decatur back Amanda Font, kicked the ball at the same time as Font. The ball arched about 40 feet in the air before dropping into the back of the net for a goal.

It was the 32nd goal for Hunt this season. She set a school record with 37 goals last year.

“Our defense played well,” said Decatur coach Brandon Frederick. “We stopped their offense. The frustrating thing is we don’t have an offensive threat.”

The Raiders outshot Decatur 12-10. Jefferson senior goalkeeper Jessica Allen recorded the shutout, her eighth shutout this season.

With the win, Jefferson assured themselves a spot in the playoffs. The Raiders lost last year in the second round.

“We’re pretty hyped-up,” Hunt said. “I think we’re ready for it. Everyone is stepping it up. We know what to expect.”
