Boys tennis: Jefferson pair wins SPSL South title

"For Mike Gerstner, coasting through the South Puget Sound League boys tennis tournament was nothing new.In his eight matches in the sub-district tournament, the Thomas Jefferson High player has not lost a match.Gerstner teamed with Pat Nam to lift his tournament record to 8-0 over the past two years. The Jefferson pair defeated Decatur's Gus Joo and Neil Upsahl in the SPSL South Division championship match at Auburn High School on Monday.On Tuesday afternoon (after press deadline), Gerstner and Nam played the champions from the North Division to determine the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds into the West Central District tournament. The district tournament will be held in the spring.By placing second, Joo and Upsahl also qualified for the district tournament. They also played Tuesday in a seeding match against a pair from the North Division.The Federal Way pair of Aaron Cho and Dan Blackner eliminated Jefferson's Aaron Michnick and Michael Brezina in the consolation quarterfinals. They then defeated a team from Curtis 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the semis. Cho and Blackner played Tuesday in a winner-to-districts, loser-out match against a North Division opponent.Jefferson's Saun Lund and Sam Kim lost in the semifinals of the winners bracket 6-2, 6-2 to Joo and Upsahl. They then lost in the consolation semifinals to Dan Shafar and Nico Zimmermann of Emerald Ridge 6-2, 6-2 and were eliminated.In singles action, Jefferson's Ali Abrahimi, seeded fourth, won his Round 2 match 6-1, 6-4 over Kasey Kelley of Bethel. He then lost in the quarterfinals to Kyle Moody of Rogers 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-7 (7-1). Peter Harker and Caleb Hall each won their Round 1 matches before losing in Round 2.Abrahimi then won his consolation quarterfinal match over Brent Barry from Puyallup, 6-3, 6-4. He then lost in the semifinals to Brandon Hair of Spanaway Lake 3-6, 6-2, 3-6 and was eliminated.Decatur's Brandon Abang lost in the consolation quarterfinals to Ryan Smith from Puyallup 6-3, 6-4 and was eliminated.Decatur's Justin Thomas and David Larpenteur won Round 1 over a pair from Emerald Ridge 6-4, 7-5 before losing to Kim and Lund in three sets. All of Federal Way's singles players lost in Round 1. In doubles, Federal Way's Chase Richards and David McColgan won their Round 1 match over a team from Bethel 6-1, 6-4 before losing a three-setter in Round 2.The tournament was due to begin last Wednesday, but the rain postponed all of the action on Thursday and Friday. Play picked up again on Saturday and resumed on Monday.Of the 16 entries remaining after the first two rounds, seven were from Federal Way schools. Three of the four teams were in the semi-finals of doubles and two of the four were in the consolations. "
