Raider wrestlers settle for few highlights

"Highlights for Thomas Jefferson in its wrestling match Thursday against visiting Spanaway Lake were easy to define. The Raiders had to settle for three straight wins by Steve Teodoro, Todd Turner and Matt Haack and a close victory by Darin Epling. In the end, the Sentinels ran away with a 48-16 victory on the strength of five pins.“They’re working hard,” said Jefferson coach Terry Botnen of his squad. “The upper-weight wrestlers have a way to go.” With the Raiders already down 13-0, Teodoro picked up the Raiders first win, 10-2, over Brandon Clarke at 119. “We’re the underdogs. We’re not worried about losing. We just want to have fun and we’re doing pretty good.”Turner followed with a 7-3 win over Steve Lewis at 125. Haack picked up Jefferson’s only pin of the match, 1:52 in to his 130-pound match against David Rising.“I’ve been wanting one of those quick easy ones,” Haack said. Epling and Rick Johnson provided the nail-biter of the match at 152 pounds. Epling jumped out to a 5-1 lead late in the second round. Two escapes and a takedown with 45 seconds left in the match pulled Johnson into a 5-5 tie. Johnson then gave Epling a 6-5 lead, letting him go with 28 seconds remaining.“He gave it to me to try to get the takedown and go up by one,” Epling said. “I knew I could stall for 20 seconds and make it look like I wasn’t.”Johnson shot in and grabbed one leg just as the buzzer sounded, but lost 6-5."
