Kentwood remains on top of North with win over TJ, 2-0
In a showdown for first place in the South Puget Sound League North Division soccer standings, the Kentwood Conquerors got the best of Jefferson Tuesday night.
The Conquerors remained atop the division with a 2-0 win over the Raiders at French Field in Kent. Kentwood tallied two goals in the second half to move to 8-1-1 in the North. The Raiders remain in second place at 6-2-2.
They are a good team, TJ coach Dave Hanson said. They just beat us. We have no excuses.
The Raiders have four more games in the SPSL North before the postseason begins. Four teams from the North will advance to the SPSL Tournament on May 10.
Defending SPSL North champion Federal Way (3-6-2) picked up a huge 4-0 win over Kentlake on Tuesday. Andrew Hair tallied two first-half goals and Carter Brossard and Kevin Olsen also found the back of the net. Senior Vinton Lane picked up the shutout in goal for the Eagles.
Beamer moved into fourth place in the SPSL South with a 2-0 win over Rogers Tuesday. The Titans (6-3-2) got goals from Daniel Nam and Ugo Okoli and Ben Draeger got the shutout in net.
The Thomas Jefferson Raiders picked up another late-inning win Tuesday. This time they downed the Kentwood Conquerors, 5-4, on a game-winning RBI by sophomore shortstop Hannah Kiyohara in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Kiyohara RBI moved the Raiders into a tie for second place in the SPSL North with Kentwood and Kentridge. All three teams sit at 7-3 in the North. Kentlake leads the division with a perfect 10-0 record.
Last week, Jefferson got a walk-off home run from Cassidy DeWaele to beat Kentridge in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Decatur Gators won a pair of matches Tuesday over Kent-Meridian to move into fourth place in the SPSL North. The Gators (5-4) downed the Royals, 3-2, in each match.
Sarah Lin and Amanda Son won both of their matches in singles against Kent-Meridian and the doubles team of Meghan Cassens and Jen Kanesta also won a pair of matches.
Track and field
The Todd Beamer Titans swept Rogers Wednesday in an SPSL South dual meet. The Titan boys won 74-62 and the girls downed Rogers, 80-61.
On the boys side, Beamer got two individual wins from Duran Ward in the 100 (11.2) and 200 (23.2). On the girls side, the Titans got three wins from Taylor Kartes in the 800 (2:30.8), 1,600 (5:35.9) and pole vault (7-0).
