Shootout showdowns: TJ rolls by Curtis, Beamer comes up short
Raiders snare leagues third seed after beating Vikings in penalty kicks
The Thomas Jefferson and Todd Beamer boys soccer team got a big taste of what the postseason is all about Wednesday night at the South Puget Sound League Tournament.
Both teams got the pleasure of enduring a shootout, something that doesnt happen during the regular season. The Raiders got the best of their shootout with a 1-0 win over Curtis. But the Titans were beaten, 1-0, by the Tahoma Bears.
Penalty-kick shootouts are not necessary until the postseason, because games cannot end in ties. Both Jefferson and Beamer will play today in loser-out, winner-to-state West Central District games.
The Raiders (9-4-4) will take on the Stadium Tigers at 11 a.m. at Bethel High School today at the Class 4A West Central District Tournament. Stadium finished the regular season in second place in the Narrows League Bridge Division, behind No. 1-ranked Bellarmine Prep. The Tigers (8-3-2) were then beaten by Olympia, 2-1, on Tuesday at the Narrows League Tournament. The loss earned Stadium the fourth seed from the Narrows.
The Titans (10-5-2) will face the South Kitsap Wolves at 1 p.m. at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Beamers loss to Tahoma meant the Titans enter the district tournament as the No. 6 seed from the SPSL.
South Kitsap earned the Narrows Leagues second seed after losing to Bellarmine Prep in Tuesdays title game, 2-0.
Wednesday night against Curtis, the Raiders outscored the Vikings, 5-4, in the penalty-kick shootout. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie through the first 80 minutes of regulation play and no one scored during the two five-minute overtime sessions.
The Raiders got shootout goals from D.J. DeWaele, Tyler Hanson, Derek Moore and Amos Nistrian. The winning goal was tallied by Chris Miller. Jefferson goalkeeper Brian Bosshart was able to stop one Curtis shot during the shootout, allowing Miller to win the match.
Beamer wasnt as lucky as the Raiders Wednesday at the SPSL Tournament. Tahoma outscored the Titans, 3-2, in the shootout after the two teams played to a 0-0 tie during regulation and overtime.
