The Federal Way National Little League Junior team has guaranteed themselves a spot into the quarterfinals of the 2007 Western Regional Tournament.

The 13 and 14 year olds earned the right to advance into the single-elimination portion of the 11-team tournament with a 10-7 win over Billings Heights National Little League from Montana on Friday morning. The top-eight teams from the two pools started the quarterfinals yesterday (after press time). The top seed from each pool will play the fourth-place team and the second and third seeds will play each other.

Federal Way played Pool A top seed Pearl City (Hawaii) yesterday morning. The winner will play today in the semifinals. Pearl City was unbeaten in the tournament.

The win over Montana moved Federal Way to 1-1 in the tournament and dropped Montana to 0-3 and eliminated them from the quarterfinals. National's Richard Apigo picked up the win on the mound for the team.

Federal Way National fell to 1-2 in the tournament with a 16-10 loss to Tijeras Creek Little League from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. on Saturday and dropped their final round-robin game to Alaska on Monday, 7-5, to earn the fourth seed from Pool B.

Federal Way lost a heart-breaker in their opening game of the tournament to Green Valley Little League from Henderson, Nev., 10-7. National took a 6-2 lead in the game before being outscored 8-1 late in the game.

The Western Regional includes the state champions from Idaho, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Nevada, Alaska, Washington, Northern California and Southern California.

The tournament runs through Thursday with the winner advancing to the Junior Little League World Series in Taylor, Mich.

Federal Way National claimed the Washington state title July 25 with a 15-6 win over Selah LL at Brannan Park in Auburn. It was the second year in a row that Federal Way has played in the state championship game. Last year, National lost in title game. Federal Way qualified for state after winning the District 10 Tournament.
