CROSS COUNTRY: Beamer girls qualify for first-ever state meet, Tafere finishes 13th
For the first time in the history of Todd Beamer High School, the Titan girls' cross country team will run at the state meet.
Beamer finished up in eighth place at the massive Westside Classic District Cross Country Meet Saturday at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood. The top-eight teams qualified for the 16-team Class 4A State Girls Cross Country Meet, which will take place Saturday at the Sun Willows Golf Course in the Tri-Cities.
The Titans were led again by sophomore Ashley Mason, who finished in 24th-place overall over the 5,000-meter course at the district championships in a time of 19:37.7.
Mason was followed by teammates Angela Mendoza (24th place, 20:44.1), Lily Do (61st, 21:11.0), Alyssa Donawa (70th, 21:23.2), Paige Hallstrom (87th, 21:51.6), Alyssa Odom (89th, 21:52.4) and Jessa Barth (91st, 21:53.7).
Things should only get better for the Titans in year's to come. All seven of Beamer's runners are underclassmen and only one of them is even a junior, the rest are freshmen and sophomores.
But the girls' team won't be the only representatives from Beamer running in the Tri-Cities this weekend. Junior Haftom Tafere and sophomore Austin Jex both qualified individually for the state meet.
Tafere had the best individual finish of any Federal Way school district runner Saturday when he ended up in 13th overall in a time of 16:13.3. Jex was right behind in 18th place in a time of 16:21.7.
The Beamer boys finished in 10th place as a team. Tahoma won the boys team title and Camas ran away with the girls championship.
Jefferson will be represented by a pair of runners at state. Senior Yohan Gebrehiwet finished in 33rd place in a time of 16:43.2 in the boys' race and junior Kelin Doner was 30th on the girls' side in a time of 19:53.8.
Federal Way's Tremaine Rambo will be the lone Eagle in the Tri-Cities after he finished in 38th place at the district meet in a time of 16:48.1.
Decatur had a pair of athletes competing in the 3A portion of the Westside Classic District Meet. Junior Kaden Lusink finished in 30th place overall in a time of 17:35.9 on the boys' side and sophomore Emma Dalin was 40th in the girls' race in 21:53.0. The top-25 individual finishers qualified for the Class 3A State Meet.
