The Decatur girls golf team just didn't have enough firepower for the Enumclaw Hornets Tuesday afternoon at the Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club. The unbeaten Hornets beat the Gators for the second time this season, 135-122, to claim the South Puget Sound League 3A Division championship.
Despite the loss, the Gators (7-2) did get an ultra-impressive performance from Celia Beyke Tuesday. The sophomore fired a 1-under par 35 at Twin Lakes to earn medalist honors. Beyke qualified for the Class 3A State Girls Golf Tournament a season ago as a ninth-grader.
The postseason for golf will kickoff on Oct. 22 at the 3A Medalist Tournament. The top players will then play on Oct. 23 with berths into the state tournament on the line. State will be played at an undisclosed location in the spring.
The Decatur boys golfers swept away the Lakes Lancers on both Monday and Tuesday. The Gators beat Lakes Monday, 63-53, at the Oakbrook Country Club in Lakewood and followed with a 73-50 win over the Lancers Tuesday on their home course at Twin Lakes.
Tyler Finneseth led the way for the Gators on Tuesday, earning medalist honors with a 1-over 37 at Twin Lakes. Spencer Clapp had Decatur's low round Monday with a 39 at Oakbrook.
The Federal Way Eagles remained unbeaten in the SPSL South Division with a 5-1 win over Bethel Tuesday night. The Eagles (5-0-5) sit in third place in the South behind Curtis (8-1-2) and Puyallup (8-1-1).
Federal Way scored early and scored often, getting a hat trick from sophomore Gariela Pelogi. Pelogi struck first in the fourth minute on a pass from Sydney Slagg. Pelogi scored again in the 26th minute and Bianca Arizpe made it 3-0 at halftime. Slagg and Pelogi added second half goals for the Eagles.
The Decatur Gators (1-6-0) won their first game of the season Tuesday night, 1-0, over the Lakes Lancers. The only goal of the game came with just three minutes left in the match from freshman Emily Shires. Alex O'Neal earned the shutout in goal for the Gators.
Beamer () pitched a 4-0 shutout of Bethel Tuesday night in SPSL South action. The Titans got two goals from Megan Anderson and Emily Gunderson and Jenny Hoefel also added scores. Casey Woehrle got the shutout in net.
Beamer (0-4 SPSL, 3-6 overall) remained winless in the SPSL South with a four-game loss to the Rogers Rams, 25-16, 18-25, 26-24, 25-22, Tuesday night.
The Titans got 16 kills, five blocks and 18 digs from Megan Huff, 38 assists and eight digs from Sophie Miller and 10 kills from Chloe Mensching.Contact Federal Way Mirror Sports editor Casey Olson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (253) 925-5565 ext. 5056.
