Beamer gymnasts end up third

The Todd Beamer High School gymnastics team belongs among the state’s elite.

The Titans proved that during Friday and Saturday’s Class 4A State Gymnastics Championships inside the Tacoma Dome’s Exhibition Center. In their first appearance in school history, the Titans finished third in the team competition Friday night with 171.075 points.

Woodinville won its second consecutive 4A title with 180.450 points, and South Puget Sound League member Puyallup finished second with 172.925.

The star of the state championships for the Titans was Kaylyn Borden. The senior tied for fifth in the all-around competition on Friday night with 36.550 points and advanced into the individual event finals on the balance beam, floor exercise and vault.

Borden ended up fourth on the balance beam with a 9.475, ninth on the floor exercise with an 8.9 and eighth on the vault with a score of 9.275 Saturday night in the individual event finals.

West Central District champion Brianna Howe of Emerald Ridge tied for the all-around title Friday with Sienna Ziltz of Lake Washington, with identical scores of 37.300.

Beamer also got solid performances during the team and all-around competitions from Cassie Peterson, Jessica Freeborn, Laura Schrader and Katie Peterson. Freshman Cassie Peterson ended up 13th in the all-around with 35.000 points and also advanced into the individual event final on the balance beam, where she finished ninth (8.9).

Freeborn and Schrader followed right behind Peterson in the all-around standings in a tie for 14th with 33.175 points. Katie Peterson finished 22nd with 32.250 points.

Other Beamer team members to compete at the state championships were Jessa Coleman, Kaily Page, Emma Cortes, Syria Selm, Bailey Patterson and Dayah Chrism.
