Federal Way School District swimmers kicked off the postseason Saturday at the South Puget Sound League Championships at Rogers High School in Puyallup.

The Decatur Gators finished in third place at the 12-team meet and also had three individual race champions. Curtis easily won the SPSL championship with 358 points, followed by Kentridge with 136 points. Federal Way finished sixth with 116 points, Beamer was ninth with 75 points and Jefferson finished 11th with 50 total team points.

Decatur’s Tommy Cunningham, along with Curtis’ Gannon Smith, were the individual stars of the meet. Cunningham won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 free, both in automatic state-qualifying times. Cunningham won the 200 in 1:49.20 and the 100 in 48.76.

Smith was the only other double winner at the SPSL meet, winning the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Cunningham wasn’t the only Decatur swimmer to bring home a first place Saturday. Robert Sobus won the 500 free in 5:11.51. Beamer’s Tommy Fraychineaud won the diving event with 391.80 and Jefferson’s Jordan Gaspay took home a first place in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:06.73.
