SPORTS BRIEFS: Senior softballers win Western National championship
August 17, 2012 · Updated 11:50 AM
The Northwest-80’s senior softball team won the 2012 SSUSA Western Nationals AAA age 80 Championship at the tournament held last week in Aurora, Colo. The team includes players 80 and older.
The NW-80s, from Federal Way, played against strong competitive teams, both from the AAA and Major divisions. The team had to fight back through the loser’s bracket to beat both Scrap Iron and the Texas Classics to be awarded the AAA championship.
According to the team’s coach, the guys played like warriors contending not only with the strong competition but also battling the mid-90’s temperatures, oppressive humidity and the effects of the mile-high altitude outside of Denver. One game was interrupted by thunder and lightening strikes and the team had to retreat to their cars.
