TENNIS: Stewart, Rosa and a pair of doubles teams advance to state tournament
As expected, Federal Way High School sophomore Mitch Stewart will play at the 2012 Class 4A State Tennis Tournament.
Stewart rolled into the semifinals of the West Central/Southwest District Tournament with a pair of easy wins at Game Farm Park in Auburn on Saturday. Stewart will take on Union's Alex Wallace at 10 a.m. at Auburn Riverside High School on Saturday.
Stewart, who finished as the runner-up in the singles' competition as a freshman last year, shut out Union's Tanner Blake in the opening round, 6-0, 6-0. Stewart then earned the automatic berth into the state tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gig Harbor's Ryan Anderson in the quarterfinals.
Stewart will be joined at state by Jefferson senior Kainoa Rosa, who will play in the other semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday against Skyview's Kent Andreason.
Rosa, who has placed at the last two state tournaments on a doubles team with his older Brother, Makoa.
Rosa beat TJ teammate Vivek Ramanujan in his district opener, 6-0, 6-1, and dominated the top seed from the Narrows League, South Kitsap's Dakota Giddings, in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3.
On the doubles' side, the TJ pair of Alex Lee and James Lee were ousted in two-straight matches after finishing second at the South Puget Sound League Tournament in the fall. Another TJ pair, Russell Stelzer and Zack Martin, also lost their first two matches.
In girls' action, two doubles teams also advanced into the semifinals at the West Central/Southwest District Tournament last weekend and onto state. Federal Way's Lauren Lang and Mina Park and Beamer's Jenny Hoefel and Kiele Bowman both won a pair of marathon matches to qualify for the state tournament, which will be held in the Tri-Cities over Memorial Day Weekend.
Lang and Park a pair from Union in their opener, 6-1, 6-1, before winning a three-setter over Bellarmine Prep's Ashley Yates and Meesha Sundarum, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (7), 6-4.
Lang and Park will take on SPSL champs Tess Manthou and Maddie Belmondo at 11:30 a.m. at Auburn Riverside Saturday in the district semifinals.
Hoefel and Bowman also had a long road into the semifinals. The sixth seed from the SPSL beat a Kentwood team in the opening round, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2, before needed another three sets to beat Kentridge's Katie Ly and Karissa Lau in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Hoefel and Bowman will play Kentridge's Katelyn Overland and Kyana Esber in the 11:30 a.m. semifinal Saturday in Auburn.
