WRESTLING: Beamer snags first-ever SPSL South championship
For the first time in the history of Todd Beamer, the Titans will hang a South Puget Sound League wrestling championship banner from the rafters of the school's gym.
Beamer secured a perfect 8-0 season in the SPSL South Division Friday by sweeping Federal Way and Graham-Kapowsin in a pair of duel meets in Graham to end the SPSL's regular season. The Titans beat up Federal Way, 64-12, and squeaked by Graham-Kapowsin, 35-33.
"It's very exciting for our team," said longtime head coach Brett Lucas.
The dual against Graham-Kapowsin was for all the marbles in the SPSL South. Both teams entered the final dual of the regular season with 7-0 records.
"It was a heated battle between many top-ranked wrestlers in the state," Lucas said.
The match came down to Beamer freshman K.J. Skannall and Graham-Kapowsin's Tyler Kline at 195 pounds. The Eagles entered the final match leading by four points in the team standings, meaning Skannall had to either earn a five-point technical fall or a six-point pin for the Titans to claim the SPSL South title.
Skannall needed just 1:10 to pin Kline and give Beamer the SPSL South championship.
"He brought home the victory and got it with a pin in the first round right on the edge of the mat," Lucas said. "Very exciting for our team."
Another huge victory for the Titans came from Deshar House at 145 pounds. House upended Graham-Kapowsin's Grant Steen by the slimmest of margins, 4-3. The win was somewhat of an upset for House and Beamer.
In the latest individual state rankings at washingtonwrestlingreport.com, Steen was the second-ranked 145-pounder in any classification and House was unranked. Steen finished third at the state tournament a season ago and eighth as a sophomore. House has wrestled at the last two state championships, but has failed to place either seasons.
"There were a few very important matches for us," Lucas said. "But that match was huge for us."
Beamer's other victories Friday against Graham-Kapowsin came from Jordan Rhodes, who got a pin at 106 pounds, Brian Dykman (11-4 decision at 120), Ares Carpio (8-3 decision at 132), Blake Hansen (won by DQ at 152), Lance Gibson (12-1 major decision at 160) and Mark Haver (14-2 major decision at 170).
According to Lucas, the SPSL South championship came as a bit of a surprise. The coach credits the continued leadership from the senior class, led by Tre Uson, Carpio, House and Aron Set-Heit, who are all four-year starters for Beamer.
"I really didn't see (the championship coming," Lucas said. "The unfortunate part is that we had to give up at least one forfeit every match and most the time two and three. It is very hard to win matches when you have to give the team points."
Up next for the Titans and the rest of the wrestling programs in Federal Way is the postseason, which kicks off Saturday at the SPSL South and North Sub-district Tournaments.
"We have very high expectations for both individuals and team," Lucas said. "We didn't finish strong last year and we are trying to right our wrong."
