SOCCER WRAP: Beamer takes control of SPSL South with 3-0 win over Emerald Ridge
Everyone knew coming into the season that the Todd Beamer Titans' soccer team had the most talent in the South Puget Sound League South Division, if not the state.
The Titans (9-0-3) proved it Friday night by shutting out the Emerald Ridge Jaguars, 3-0, at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The win gives Beamer total control of the SPSL South with four games remaining in the regular season. The loss was the first of the year for Emerald Ridge (8-1-2). The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in their first meeting of the season.
But Friday night it was all Beamer. After playing a scoreless first half, the Titans got on the board on a goal from sophomore Austin Sweeney in the 58th minute of the game. It was the first of two from the talented midfielder. Sweeney also gave Beamer a little insurance in the 76th minute.
Senior Ugo Okoli, who has played with the United States Under-18 National Team and has already signed with Wake Forest University, scored the Titans' third goal in the 78th minute on a pass from Troy Peterson.
Beamer now leads Emerald Ridge in the SPSL South standings by four points. Nick Bod finished with the shutout in goal for the Titans.
The Eagles (5-4-2) were upset by Graham-Kapowsin Friday night on the road, 3-2. Graham-Kapowsin picked up a hat trick by Wyatt Plattner after Federal Way took a quick 1-0 lead.
Alex Lewis tallied the Eagles' first goal in the 10th minute. Freshman Odason Pelogi scored Federal Way's second goal in the 70th minute.
The Raiders (7-2-2) shut out the Mount Rainier Rams Friday night in Des Moines, 3-0. Jefferson got a pair of goals from sophomore Isidro Prado-Huerta and Jimmy Oganga tallied a first-half goal.
McKay Owsley and Luis Roman combined on the shutout in goal for TJ. The win kept the Raiders in second place behind Kentwood (8-0-3) in the SPSL North.
The Gators (6-2-0) remained in a three-way tie atop the SPSL 3A Division with a 4-1 win over Peninsula Friday. Auburn Mountainview and Bonney Lake also sit 6-2-0 in league play.
Decatur got a pair of goals from Dominique Dismuke and single goals from Ali Villalon and freshman Marco Bravo.
