GYMNASTICS: Jefferson snares sub-district championship

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders gymnastics team just keeps getting better. The Raiders won the three-league subdistrict meet Saturday at Mount Rainier High School.

The Raiders outdistanced Beamer to win the meet that also included teams from the rest of the South Puget Sound League, Narrows and Olympic. Jefferson finished with 173.675 points, followed by the Titans with 172.4 points. Six teams earned berths into next weekend's West Central District Meet, also at Mount Rainier.

The score by Jefferson was an all-time high score for the program coached by Debbie Hunter and avenges a loss to Beamer during the final SPSL regular season meet of the year last week.

But it was Beamer's Sam West who had the best individual meet. West won the all-around title with a score of 36.925, edging Jefferson's Madi Kellar (36.9).

West also won the floor exercise with an impressive 9.5 and Kellar took home first place on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.4.

The Raiders also got solid performances from Shelby and Monica Church at the SPSL sub-district meet. Shelby Church finished up in fifth place in the all-around competition with a score of 35.75 and Monica Church was eighth overall with 35.05 points. Shelby Church finished in a tie for third on the balance beam with a 9.2.

The West Central District 4A meet gets under way at 4:10 p.m. Friday at Mount Rainier High School.
