Susan Honda and diversity | Q&A with Mr. Federal Way

Q: Mr. Federal Way, Susan Honda just announced she’ll take on Mayor Jim Ferrell. Do you think she has what it takes?

A: Full disclosure: Mr. Federal Way received a question like this a while ago before Honda announced her candidacy. Mr. Federal Way pondered the idea of Honda as Federal Way’s mayor but promptly skipped that question until speculation became reality. Well, Bob Roegner called it. The rumors were true. How does he do that?

To answer your question: Beats me. Honda is an unusual mix of conservative fiscal ideals and just enough interest in social issues to impress a Democrat. Oddly enough, she believes the city should be able to pay for its services before it goes around promising them. At the same time, she wants money for her interests, such as homelessness. But don’t we all. Mr. Federal Way will take $5,000 for a trip to Bermuda and some time surfing. But Mr. Federal Way’s priorities are a lot less complicated than the city’s (but really, $5,000 ain’t askin’ too much, is it? Alcott?) Anyway, Honda’s time on the Federal Way City Council has prepared her for many things, including a whole lotta community complaints. She says she values open, honest government and collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and the school district. But Jimmy has said the same thing, so you be the judge. Then again, she hasn’t lost her temper — yet — and will occasionally ask the hard questions so unpopular among politicians — mostly directed at Ferrell. She loves seeing him sweat. But, Mr. Federal Way wonders if she could go toe to toe with the likes of someone like Tom Messmer, the vice president of Industrial Realty Group’s special projects. And what’s the deal with hiring a city administrator? Is it a cop out, since she hasn’t presented a detailed plan for how she intends to spend the rest of her time? Sure, the mayor has two advisers to work on stuff he doesn’t have time for and chirp in his ear when he’s unsure, but will Federal Way get more bang for the buck with a city administrator over the two robins sitting on Jimmy’s shoulders? Mr. Federal Way admits he’ll need to do a little more research on this, but the questions remain.

Q: Mr. Federal Way, what did you do on President’s Day?

A: None of your business.
