Qualifications for a strong mayor | Federal Way letters

Now that the election's over and the bitter words are quieted, it's time to move on.

The next step will be electing a full-time mayor for Federal Way's new strong mayor/council form of government. This mayor will represent about 88,000 men, women and children in the eighth largest city in Washington. The job of mayor here won't be a small-town task, but a large responsibility. So some job qualifications are certainly worth consideration for whoever puts his or her name into the hat.

Here's my qualifications list:

• Several years in a major management capacity, ideally in a municipal environment.

• History of selfless dedication to the best interests of a community.

• Sound fiscal practices.

• Proven ability to listen well and to respond thoughtfully.

• Track record of vision and innovation.

As one of more than 50,000 registered Federal Way voters, our obligation will be to carefully study candidates' qualifications and history and to select the best one by voicing our preferences at the polls. Be there!

Sandy Petitt, Federal Way
