Mark Twain spoke of lies, damned lies and statistics. Karen Hedwig Backman’s recent letter about outlawing guns was full of statistics. I’d like to respond with some of my own.
Statistic No. 1: The Bill of Rights contains 10 amendments to the Constitution. Number two guarantees American citizens the right to own firearms, as reaffirmed by recent Supreme Court decisions. Ms. Backman would have to repeal the Second Amendment to realize her wish.
Statistic No. 2: 50 states have granted their citizens the right to carry concealed firearms. The reason they have done this is because violent crime rates drop by 25 percent, at no cost to taxpayers. Contrast that with England, which has completely banned guns, and as a result now has one of the highest violent crime rates in the world.
Statistic No. 3: Polls repeatedly show that 66 percent of American voters agree with the National Rifle Association positions regarding gun ownership. Why do a majority of politicians support the National Rifle Association? Because their constituents do. This may sound trite — but if you ban guns then only violent criminals will have guns. I prefer to retain the right to defend myself if need be.
