Legislative experience validates Federal Way High School education | Letter
I am overwhelmingly excited to announce that my time in Olympia as a part of the House of Representatives Page Program was published in the Federal Way Mirror.
I was amazed by collaborative connections in which I was able to form between my educational training and the work that was presented before me. While acting as a state representative, I was asked to draft a bill. Initially, I felt overwhelmed, but I remembered the skills in Mr. Vanderpol’s critical thinking skills class. I prepared arguments that could arise to refute my bill.
In crafting the bills, my writing had to be succinct and direct. The words of Ms. Ash rang over my head, reminding me to be direct. In discussing environmental issues, I recalled the words that were imparted by Ms. Ha: “Use the scientific method and create thesis sentences while providing supportive data to prove your thesis.”
I began to see how all my subjects had an interdisciplinary connection. Mr. Vanderpol’s preparation on how to have reasoning arguments with supportive data was parallel with Ha’s supporting evidence.
Mrs. Schumacher’s class was extremely helpful in giving me the ability to communicate with an exchange student from Switzerland. I continued to practice French and speak with this student.
Mrs. Ahern’s teaching was beneficial in preparing me for public speaking. Her words reminded me to speak from my diaphragm and know that you can persuade/command your audience. Remembering these words encouraged me to overcome some initial jitters.
The experience in Olympia validated the level of education I am receiving at Federal Way High School. I am appreciative of the education I’m receiving and never forget that many young women around the world do not have this same opportunity.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and written recommendations on my behalf. I am so thankful for everyone who has poured words of encouragement and continues to reassure me through my many goals and aspirations.
