Can Federal Way afford the PACC? | Letter

Since when have the people of Federal Way given the City Council the go-ahead on the Performing Arts and Conference Center (PACC)? With the sped-up vote at the December Council meeting, it appears they are determined to move forward with this project.

If we were to have a vote of Federal Way citizens, the people would make a thought-out decision on the PACC proposal. The idea of a PACC is sound but there is much concern over the overall costs of the building and the following maintenance cost.

Can we afford a Benaroya Hall-type facility, when we have competing venues in nearby cities of Auburn, Tacoma and Kent?

After raising your family, paying for housing, quality schools, transportation, safety in our neighborhoods with police and fire protection, there may not be a lot of disposable income to pay for an expensive venue such as the PACC.

Did we support higher-end grocers like Top Foods and Metropolitan Market when there are lower cost stores in our community? Now those buildings sit vacant.

We need to vote on the PACC now before the Council chooses for us. I support the arts, but I deserve a vote on a project of this important size and endeavor in our community.

Andy Larpenteur, 25-year resident of Federal Way
