Kelly Maloney has a vision for our community | Election letters
I am writing an open letter to the community of Federal Way to open your eyes and really evaluate the issues at hand in our community and the best person on the roster who has addressed those issue, even prior to being on the city council as a volunteer.
It appears that The Mirror has decided to endorse Mark Koppang, whom they cited as having an economic development strategy, to which is say, what are they thinking? Where is the proof of this? Mark does not have an economic development strategy. He proposed that the city continue doing what is has been doing since incorporation — go after businesses. He has never done anything as a volunteer or in any other capacity to make this happen.
Kelly Maloney, on the other hand, has volunteered hundreds of hours toward economic development for the city before being appointed to the council. While on the Federal Way Chamber's board of directors, she participated in their Economic Development Strike Force to determine how to attract businesses that would bring and create jobs for Federal Way. She created "Buy Federal Way," bringing together 40 businesses in a shop local effort to make our current businesses stronger. This effort was eventually combined with the Federal Way Chamber's Federal Way First shop local initiative. She co-led the Think Federal Way economic development campaign, which has resulted in businesses considering Federal Way as a locale, some of which have since brought about 400 jobs to the city.
Kelly has voted for the development on the former AMC site that is proposed to have a "Kent Station" feel with a park and mixed-use, and will allow for the first step in the goal to have a pedestrian-friendly downtown core with stores, restaurants, amenities, a park and more. She has worked diligently and collaboratively on the "college initiative" as a long-term vision (in addition to the others, which are immediate short-term visions), bringing together people representing colleges, government and industry from across the country, at the state level, regionally, and right here in Federal Way.
Her research into other municipalities that have done something similar has shown an increase in their tax revenues in the hundreds of millions of dollars that allow them to upgrade their infrastructure and build other amenities for the community, as well as put more money into human services.
I support Kelly Maloney and I have shared with you several reasons why she should also have your vote, as she has a vision for our community that will allow us to thrive. During such a troubling time in our country, we need someone like Kelly to be on the Federal Way City Council to help lead our community into the future and establish some financial stability with real solutions.
