Kelly Maloney is the best candidate for Federal Way City Council Position 2, hands down.
I don't know how The Mirror's editorial board missed it, but she has been contributing to the betterment of our community for more than a decade as a volunteer, and is not just the "join the board of directors to feel important" kind of volunteer. Kelly has been creating and developing strategic and creative ways to change the outlook for Federal Way through action.
Kelly's action-oriented and collaborative approach to economic development has resulted in the city gaining 400 new jobs by being the impetus to attract DaVita health care.
She is still working on economic development initiatives for the short-term, continuing to attract businesses to Federal Way, while concurrently driving forward her long-term economic development initiative of bringing universities to the downtown core.
This long-term view will engender a downtown that is walkable and rich in terms of stores, restaurants and establishments that provide experiences — from parks and theaters, and possibly even to a privately-funded performing arts center. It's a university-based Kent Station type of vision.
Kelly has conceived of numerous ways to help increase the positive perception of the city from proposing a Federal Way news program that would tell hard-hitting news, but primarily highlight the positive aspects of all the city has to offer; to proposing a way to fill our empty commercial real estate by attracting wineries for a "Woodinville style" wine tasting and vintner cluster.
She is currently spearheading the city's re-imaging campaign — drawing on her expertise in marketing communications and branding. She will be able to provide expert advice to the city on this endeavor while also providing a cost-savings for the project. In the end, the messaging that will come out of this initiative will be from all constituents and will be gained through surveys and focus groups. Kelly has the ability to take that information and apply strategy and tactics to implement it for success.
Because of all of this and her honest ways, Kelly has gained the respect of her peers, many of whom have worked with her on these initiatives. She has sought consensus on projects and brought in people from all walks of life. Kelly is a collaborator.
Let's be honest, Kelly has done more in the past 10 years than most people do in a lifetime for others. She has had a real impact on our community. I, for one, want to see her continue in the work she's doing because I know she is business friendly, family friendly, and just plain friendly, and those are characteristics I value.
Kelly Maloney for city council.
