Vote for Maloney and a brighter future | Letters
Your vote to retain Kelly Maloney for city council is a vote for a brighter future for Federal Way.
I've known Kelly Maloney for 15 years, and in that time she has proven to be one of the most honest and principled people I know. She has always done what was right, not just what was easy. Kelly has withstood a torrent of criticism since joining city council only four months ago, because she had the nerve to stand up for others.
And, despite the negativity being shown her, she is continuing to work on behalf of all residents in Federal Way by bringing together the mayor, city staff, colleges, the school district, the state, and large corporations, working to create an atmosphere of innovation in our downtown core that has the potential of creating five jobs for Federal Way residents for every one innovation job. Kelly believes this "college initiative" could result in increasing the tax base so we can add much-needed police officers and also fix our aging sewer system in the downtown core.
Kelly is also spearheading the rebranding of the city, working with other councilmembers and city staff. She is utilizing her expertise in this area to turn around the city's image, changing the negative perception some have of Federal Way into a positive one. She believes the city's brand is directly tied to our ability to attract businesses and development.
I do not remember a time when any councilmember has done so much for our city in such a short period of time on council, or beforehand as a volunteer. As a community volunteer, Kelly co-led the Think Federal Way campaign that was, in part, responsible for DaVita considering Federal Way as a place to locate their offices, which they ultimately decided to do, bringing approximately 350 jobs to the city.
Kelly not only works collaboratively with others on economic development and other initiatives, but she rolls up her sleeves and gets in the trenches to make the kind of difference Federal way needs. This unique characteristic is one way she stands apart from others.
The Federal Way Police Guild has endorsed Maloney, and she received an “Outstanding” rating from the Municipal League. One of Kelly's opponents, Mark Koppang, received a “Good" rating, falling from a "Very Good" rating in his last unsuccessful bid for city council.
Maloney has the character you’re looking for on city council, and she continues to contribute to the community in measurable ways.
I will be voting for Kelly Maloney because of her character, morals and integrity — not to mention all the work she's contributing to our city to make it a better place to live. She’s one of a kind — and that’s just the kind we need for Federal Way.
