Cantwell saw through drilling issue

As a supporter of the League of Conservation Voters, I would like to offer my praise and admiration to U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell for her leadership in protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Sen. Cantwell understands that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, and that exploration in the Arctic will do little to ease our nation’s energy problems.

In the Senate budget process, Sen. Cantwell proposed –– and fought hard for -–– an amendment to strip fiscally irresponsible revenue assumptions on drilling in the Arctic refuge. Although the amendment was ultimately voted down by the narrowest of margins on the Senate floor, Cantwell’s heroic efforts to preserve one of America’s last wild places should be lauded.
